I Am Surprised

I Am Surprised

By John W. Vander Velden

When I stand where I stand and look about my world, surveying my place in it all, I am left wondering.  If I take the time to consider all my successes and failures, I find myself surprised at the place I find myself...today.
I understand that step by step, forward and backward as well, my journey has shaped me into who I have become.  Along the way I have always felt it my obligation to take my advances with humility while accepting responsibility for my failings, for I understand that I am but human.  Acknowledging that if I have any talents at all, they are the results of gifts given for my use by a power far beyond me.  While honestly recognizing my weakness helps me to accept mistakes made by others.  And so I tend to judge those around me less harshly than I judge myself.
Yet when I survey where I stand...today...I am surprised.
Though I often dwell on all the unfulfilled aspirations, the years spent with only modest progress, I need to stop and look at the whole of it.   For if I consider the things I have done, the places I have seen, the work I have accomplished, the people I have met...I am astonished.
So I look forward and cannot know what lies ahead, but if what lies behind is any indication, when I scan the place I will stand one day in the future...I will be surprised...
For my GOD has brought me this far, and HE will carry me through all my tomorrows...that that won’t surprise me a bit.

The Ocean Calls Me

The Ocean Calls Me

By John W. Vander Velden

The ocean calls me.  I hear its voice though I walk upon its shore too seldom.  Drawn back to land’s edge, the sandy beaches, to reconnect in ways not understood.  Perhaps it is the vastness, the wide view of distant horizon.  Or the unbelievable power of wind and water that draws me.  The recognition of power far beyond my imagining as water splashes at my feet.  I find a connection there at the shoreline, a connection between myself and something grander…greater…wonderful…GOD.  I understand that GOD exists in all places but as I stand on the edge of the ocean…as I stand with the wind blowing through my hair…as I stand with the wave’s thunder filling my ears…as I stand watching the water’s curling foam…I know, really know that I stand in HIS presence.

The ocean calls me…and I shall return…

Naive?

Naïve?

By John W. Vander Velden

Sometimes it seems to me that the world has found itself in the wash cycle, all tossed and tumbled about.  Maybe it has to do with my age.  The years have a way of doing that, as we wonder about changes, while dwelling on imperfect memories of times past.  I need to remind myself that not all of the “good ole days” were indeed good.  Yet all the same each of us look around and shake our heads and wonder.  It must be enough to know that God is in charge…and in the end things will work out.

Yet among societies change are those that stand firm in their convection that everything is some sort of random accident, adamant in their view that God does not exist…never has for that matter.  That view, to me, carries no logic.

You see I have been fortunate to have labored under sun and sky, tended livestock and tilled soil.  I have worked long hours alone…that is without other people…but have understood that I was never alone.  Raised in a home where God was real, as real as my sisters and brothers, my mother and father, my Aunt and Uncle, as real as my best friend that lived down the road.  It doesn’t mean I didn’t question God…what was happening…but never God’s existence.

Some might think that I was merely induced to accept His presence, but though I was taught, I have my own connections.  For I have seen God in the sunrise, the pinks that fill the eastern sky, and in the flaming reds painted all around at the sun’s evening departure.  I have seen God, when the barn’s first dim light was reflected in the eyes of a newborn calf, or the thin shoots of corn that crack the soil and reach up toward the sky.  I have seen God in the fresh brand new leaves of spring, and the golds and reds that dress the hardwood in autumn.  Truth, I look for Him everywhere and I am not disappointed.  I hear God in the rumbling thunder that rattles my ribs, but also in the whisper of the leaves that high above are sent to singing by the summer breeze.  I hear God in the robin’s evening song, and the scarlet clothed Cardinal welcoming of a new day. I hear Him in the beating heart of my beloved and heard Him in the first cry of our son that long night years ago.   I hear God when I listen…really listen…and once I heard his voice when in my anguish I yearned for answers.  I feel God in the wind that sometime pulls at my clothing or shakes the house late at night.  I feel God in the cold wet of a sudden rainstorm that drenches me through and through.  I feel God in the warmth of the sun on a clear winter’s day.  I felt God as I held my child those long hours I walked the floor in the darkness. I feel God all around me in the commonest and least common places, whenever I draw a breath and take the moment to notice.

You see unlike those that purposely close themselves to the possibility of God, I deliberately open myself.  The reality is more than words on a page.  The reality is more than hymns and sermons.  The reality is more than the present state of mind.  It is more than past’s limitations.  For God in more than we can understand.  More than imaginations can reach.  Human desire to be “top of the heap” does not mean we have the right to claim that place.  In a fast changing world where breakthroughs of technology abound, a time when so much of “our” world seems explainable and soon all questions will fall to the wayside, some see no place in that equation for a supreme being.  But scientific explanations cannot disregard the creator of science, and the rules of the universe are too complex to have occurred by chance.

Though the western hemisphere was unknown in medieval Europe, it did not come into being because of Columbus’s or any other explorer’s voyage.  We understand that.  Whether or not we acknowledge God, does not change the fact He exists.  Each of us has been given the freedom to choose, a gift of great responsibility.  A responsibility too few have taken the time to consider.  Easier to close our minds, one way or the other, and move along like cattle through our lives, than to take the time needed to really choose and understand the choosing.

Perhaps I am fortunate.  Perhaps this life style I have lived offered me opportunities few share.  Perhaps I just allow myself to be open…to see…to hear…to feel…to know.  Some might say I am naïve, I would disagree.

Standing Stll

Standing Still

By John W. Vander Velden

I find myself standing still in the dark.  The winter’s night surrounds and flakes sail on the faint breath of crisp air.  The cold stings in my lungs on each breath that is drawn and when released floats as a small cloud of my making, drifting an instant and gone.  I stand where I am and feel the cold, watch the snow falling, taste the pure air, and smell a pureness of a world scrubbed clean by the winter.

Closing my eyes, drawing frozen air deep within, holding it a moment, I know.  Not all things can be held, seen, or touched.  Perhaps it is through life we learn about the “more”.   Perhaps it is a gift.  Some might consider the knowing a curse, but I find that knowledge among my greatest possessions.  For here in the dark I understand that I am surrounded by the “more”.  More than the cold.  More than the snow.  More than the darkness.  More than even my life.  More than I can ever know.  The unseen but real that exists everywhere.

My mind thinks of a single kernel of corn, small and orange.  I imagine it in my hand, hard and cold.  I can feel it as I roll it between my fingers. I know if I were to open the seed I would find only starch, for the miracle it contains is too small to see.  But when the year’s snows are but a memory I will place seeds carefully in uncountable rows and know that those seeds will soon be “more”.   I am confident that stalks will grow from those tiny bits I have held.

The thought reminds me that not everything can be placed in a box.  Though the human race may stretch our knowledge, questions remain.  Simply because those questions go unanswered does not decrease their relevance, for there are truths that go on beyond our reach.  I find comfort in the secure knowledge that the cosmos does not exist as some random accident, and recognize that I am part of something greater.

On a winter’s night my senses attune to the world, the cold, the dark, to the gently falling snow, to my heartbeat.  I know that my life’s complexities and difficulties will not simply vanish, like the mist of my breath on this night.  Yet knowing I do not face these things alone gives me peace.  For I am confident that liberally blended in the “more”, the unfathomable greatness, is love.

Standing still, I know I am surrounded by the reality I can touch and “more”, and comforted knowing that within that intangible, love exists.

What Do You Know?

What Do You Know?                 1-30-2013

Many years ago there was a moment when a business acquaintance asked me a question.  The young man was merely making conversation when he asked, “What do you know, for sure.”  I gave what I felt was a clever come back, “Not much really…but I know a lot of things…maybe…!”

The truth of that statement has haunted me for years.  What do we know…for sure?  What are the absolute truths we carry with us each day?   So much we know has been taught to us.  We know many facts because someone told us.  I for one have never seen Mount Everest…I believe it is the tallest mountain in the world.  Yet I will never go to Napal with a tape measure and determine for myself just how tall that mountain truly is.  We have been told it is tall and take that as fact…verbatim.  But what if that and thousands of other bits of information are fabricated gibberish…How would you and I know?  There remains the rub…all the things I know…maybe!

But that’s alright.  Humanity shares much information, and we consider it truth until something proves it is not.  It is enough to know that there are seven time zones in Russia, that Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere and Madagascar has many species found nowhere else.  That the Nile flows north and the Mississippi begins in Minnesota.  And that there are millions of facts that fill libraries and attempt to overfill our minds…That’s alright!

But that is not what the question asks.  It asks about the for sure part.  “What do you know…for sure?  Few take the time to consider that question.  And I expect fewer have taken the time to come up with an answer…but I have.  The answers I have assembled may not be the answer that fits you.  But the things I know for sure are:  That water is wet, the sky is blue and my parents loved me…that there is a God in Heaven and Jesus has the power to save me from myself.  And when push comes to shove there is little else that matters!

What do you know for sure?
